2026 Bird Bander Training with Puget Sound Bird Observatory

Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn the skills needed to participate in monitoring and research programs involving bird banding.

The Bander Training courses are  five-day hands-on training classes that takes place over two weekends this summer. We will be offering two courses this year, both in September.

The southern course will take place at beautiful and birdy Northwest Trek in Eatonville. The northern course will take place across Edmonds, Woodinville and Shoreline. The timing of these courses will allow students to learn from adult birds breeding and post breeding, and newly hatched first-year birds.

We will be covering all you need to know about catching, extracting, handling, aging and sexing, collecting biometrics for birds in hand. This course delves extensively into molt strategies and calendars for passerines and near passerines. The courses come with a textbook and a copy of the second edition of the Peter Pyle Guide to the Birds of North America.

New banders will work with coaches and our instructor to practice techniques and develop skills over five days of classes and practice sessions.
