State of the Seabirds: What the 2025-26 Season Revealed

What happens to seabirds in the Salish Sea over the course of a winter? Thanks to the dedication of hundreds of Puget Sound Seabird Survey volunteers, we're beginning to answer that question.
We're excited to share the new PSSS 2025–26 State of the Seabirds Report, which highlights what volunteers accomplished during the past survey season and explores how their observations are helping us better understand the health of Puget Sound's marine ecosystem. More than just a summary of the season, the report tells the story of the birds that depend on the Salish Sea each winter, showcases some of the fascinating patterns revealed by the surveys, and explains why long-term community science is so valuable for conservation.
Most importantly, this report is a celebration of the volunteers who make the Puget Sound Seabird Survey possible. Every survey contributes to an 18-year dataset that is being used
by researchers to better understand changes in marine bird populations across the Salish Sea.
